Born Devonport, Tasmania, Australia.
A missionary to India. He was described in a Tasmanian magazine as “everybody’s friend”. One said of him, “While driving around South India I was surprised by the number of salutes, smiles and stops there were. Bert took time to get to know the people. He cared about them and they knew it.” The Malavalli Boy’s Home, near Maddur is a credit to his 30 years of service. Now it has more than 200 boys. They take them from small children right through to vocational training. Bert was brutally murdered on one of his pastoral missions in the Chickmagalur District.
